John (4) GOODENOW Capt was born in 1635 in Dunhead, St. Andrew, Wilts, Eng. (1191) Came in the ship Confidence with father, as infant. He was apparently, like his father an active member in early Sudbury affairs. He and others built a saw mill there. He was a Captain in the militia.
It would seem that later in life he tested the patience of his peers. After detailing the remarkable record of 65 acts of community servies, a George Don Max, in his "John Goodenow in Sudbury" account cites his numerous accomplishments and ends with: "Toward the end of his political life, perhaps due to a possible and lengthy illness of his wife ... and because of thoughtless and uncontrollable impulses and desires, he finally placed himself in a situation that even his peers would not brook. However it happened, his was a record of effective service to his town." He died on 6 Aug 1721 in Sudbury, Middlesex, MA. Parents: Edmond (Edmund) GOODENOW Capt and Anne Hannah BARRY?.
John married Mary Axtell, daughter of Thomas Axtell and Maryann, on 19 Sep 1658 in Sudbury, MA. (Mary Axtell was born on 25 Sep 1639 in Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, England and died on 14 Apr 1704 in Sudbury, MA.)
