116. Dr. Hiram Griswold, son of Ebenezer Griswold and Hannah Merrill, was born in 1785 in Vermont.28

General Notes: The brothers Griswold, Nathaniel L. and George, hailed from East Lime, Connecticut, and had arrived in New York in the 1790s, and soon made a fortune shipping flour to the West Indies and bringing back sugar and rum. Eventually, they got into the tea trade because that's where the money was. N. L. & G. Griswold, by the 1840s, had acquired a fleet of forty-three ships, all flying the checkered blue and white house flag. The Panama was their most well known ship and her picture along with "Ship Panama" and "N. L. & G. Griswold," was printed on all her tea chest and carton labels and they were in every country store in America. Their firm was so prosperous that in jest people said that the initials stood for "No Loss and Great Gain." Three ships in succession were named "Ship Panama."

A Griswold ship being loaded at their East River Pier.

The Griswolds fit the mold of lanky, hatchet-faced New England Yankees with ruddy complexions, and both were over six feet tall. The younger brother, "Old Nat," was the shipping expert and wore a slouch hat, instead of the silk topper worn by other merchants. George was the bookkeeping wizard who also dabbled in banking and real estate. The Griswolds kept a tight rein on their captains and drove them hard. Both brother's penmanship was so bad as to be indecipherable even to themselves and this drove their clerks crazy. One clerk of the firm was considered indispensable, for he alone could understand George's scrawl.

Nat also branched out into other business and won a $100,000 dredging contract from the New York State legislature for the dredging and deepening of New York Harbor.

They owned their entire fleet, did little chartering, and auctioned off their tea independently, receiving up to $700,000 per cargo. Now, they wanted to get into the California trade in a big way and had commissioned William Webb to build a sharp new clipper for their firm that was to be the largest yet to slide down the ways, to be called the Challenge.

George Griswold soon took notice of Robert Waterman about town and approached him with a most intriguing offer, one that he knew Waterman would find hard to refuse, and offered him the chance to come out of retirement and set a record breaking California passage as captain of the largest clipper ship in the world. To sweeten the offer even further, George Griswold offered Waterman a $10,000 bonus if he took up the challenge of winning the Cape Horn sweepstakes with the Challenge and succeeded in making a passage of 90 days or less. George Griswold knew that this kind of talk would appeal to Waterman, and encouraged him to go up to William Webb's shipyard and take a look at the Challenge for himself. Griswold assured Waterman that there was still time enough for him to supervise the final layout of the rigging.

Like a moth drawn to the light, Waterman found this too hard to resist and went up to William Webb's shipyard, and was soon walking around the huge sharp hull of the Challenge, that was twice as large as the Sea Witch, checking her out from every angle. He had set all the early records in the China tea trade and they still stood unbroken and would stand the test of time, but he had yet to race a California clipper around the Horn to the Golden Gate for the laurels of that race as well.

Before long, Robert Waterman was quivering with anticipation and returned to the Griswold's counting house to take a look at the rigging plans and soon proposed adding additional sail. He had taken up the challenge of the Cape Horn sweepstakes not knowing at the time that he had just made the biggest mistake of his life.

238. Jonathan Fletcher, son of John Fletcher and Unknown, was born on 29 Aug 1753 in Leominster, Worcester, Ma and died on 2 Feb 1854 in Walpole, Cheshire, Nh. at age 100.

General Notes: FLETCHER, JONATHAN, the centenarian, was born in Loeminster, Mass., Aug. 29, 1753. He came to Walpole in 1780, when he was twenty-seven years of age and purchased fifty acres of land of Gen. Benjamin Bellows (to which his son afterwards made additional purchases) built himself a cabin in the wilderness and lived on the same place seventy-three years, where he died having attained to the unusual age of one hundred years five months and four days. The census of 1840, disclosed the fact that there were but twelve persons living in the State, who were one hundred years old and upwards, therefore Mr. Fletcher, at his death was not only "one in a
thousand," but one in twenty-four thousand. He is the Methuselah of our town, as no other person is known to have lived to that extraordinary age, although quite a number have approximated to it. He was in build a slender man, rather undersized, with a thin chest and somewhat stooping in carriage towards the close of his life. He was out a short time in the Revolutionary struggle but never in any engagement
He was industrious when it was day, frugal in expenditure, temperate in habits, unobtrusive in demeanor, kind in his family and cheerful in disposition. He voted at every presidential election, and was punctual at town meetings, and in later years was honored with a seat in the desk, near the town officials, on account of impaired hearing. He was fond of reading and read much, having read the Bible through twenty-nine times in twenty-seven years, as he told his son. Watts' hymns were frequently read and from some of them he derived much consolation. When the Cheshire railroad was being constructed he felt afraid that he might not live to the time of its completion; but he did and stood in his doorway with dimmed eyes and .streaming locks which had been silvered by the frosts of ninety-six winters and witnessed the fiery steed with a long train pass over the ground where sixty-nine years before he felled the trees to build his first cabin. What must have been his musings, imagination only can paint. He retained his faculties, with the exception of hearing, to the last, and was as well as usual the day before he died. In the evening, while the family were unconscious of any special change, he calmly peacefully and without a struggle passed away. He married Abigail Goodenow, June 11, 1781, b. Nov. 1, 1759; d. Sept. 28, 1825, they having lived together forty-four years. He died Feb. 2, 1854. They had a family of eight children, viz.:

Birth Notes: possibly 1632

General Notes: FRANCIS 3 (s. of Edward 2, Sir Matthew 1) was born in England in 1632; came to New England, 1639, with his father, from Warwickshire, England; later moved from Windsor to Saybrook and from there to Norwich.

Francis 2 (Edward 1) According to the records of Salisbury, depositions by two sons of George (No. 43) states that the oldest son of their grandfather Edward was always reputed to be Francis. Further evidence is given in the deed of gift by Edward when he names his grandchild by Francis, then his other sons in order of their birth. Since Francis was married about 1652, he would have been born in 1629. The history of New London by Caulkins identifies him erroneously as Francis of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
No record has been found to identify his wife. The claim that she was a daughter of Thomas Tracy is disproved in GFA II: 20 (1935 ed.). She may possibly have been the daughter of Stephen and Tryphora (Lee) Tracy of Plymouth, b. circa 1631 (Boston Transcript 7219).

Francis was a man of capacity and enterprise. He first settled in Windsor and Poquonoc, then in Saybrook, and finally in Norwich. He is listed as one of the first proprietors of Norwich although few records exist before 1660. One of these is a notice of a town meeting Jan. 7, 1655/6 at which Francis was present. He served as deputy 1660-1671; was appointed on the Court Commission in 1661; and was Lieutenant of the trainband. He is listed as Lieutenant just before King Philip's War.

He died in October 1671 and was buried with his wife in the old Post-Gager Cemetery over which there was a controversy between the town authorities and the friends of history who desired this cemetery to be left undisturbed.

An interesting letter written by Benjamin Brewster of Norwich, grandson of Elder William Brewster of Plymouth to his brother-in-law, Daniel Wetherill, concerning Francis shows that people in early times were as keen on business as those of a later date. This letter is quoted in full in GFA II: 21.

Children: first four recorded in Saybrook, the latter in Norwich.

General Notes: Edward Griswold was born circa 1607 at England. He was the son of George Griswold and Dousabel Leigh. Edward Griswold was baptized on 26 July 1607 at Wooten Wawen, Warwickshire, England. He married Margaret (?) circa 1628 at England. Edward Griswold married Sarah Dimond, daughter of John Dimond and Rebecca Bemis, before 25 December 1672. Edward Griswold died in 1690.3

Mr. Edward Griswold came to America at the time of the second visit of Mr. George Fenwick, at which date, also, came a large number of new settlers to the Conn. settlement. It was at a time when many of the gentry of England and wealthy persons connected with the Warwick Patent were intending removal hither; but the breaking out of the Scotch Rebellion compelled King Charles to call a Parliament, and they stayed at home to carry on their struggle with the King and Archbishop Laud. Mr. Griswold undoubtedly came in the interest of some of these patentees. He was attorney for Mr. St. Nicholas of Warwickshire, who had a house built in Windsor, and also a tract of land "impaled" (fenced), as had Sir Richard Saltonstall. The Rev. Ephraim Hit, who came, also in 1639, was from the same parish, as, also, the Wyllys family, who settled at Hartford.

His first location in Windsor is not known; but he had a grant of land in Poquonock, to which re removed, in 1649, accompanied by a few families, who there found an "outpost" settlement. His residence at Poquonock was on the site of the present dwelling of the heirs of the late Eliphalet S. Ladd, and who, on the female side, are Griswold descendants. The spot is a beautiful knoll which overlooks the brook on the west, and the Tunxis River on the south and east. As soon as he had fairly established his home, he began to take that active part i public matters which was natural to a man of his character. In 1650 he built the "Old Fort" at Springfield for Mr. Pyncheon; in 1656 he was a deputy from Windsor to the General Court, and continued, with the exception of one session, to represent the town until the reception of the charter from King Charles. At this time he was the principal promoter of a new settlement authorized by the court, called Hommonoscett, which lay immediately west of Saybrook, and to which, about 1663, he removed with his younger children, deeding to his sons, George and Joseph, who remained behind, his Windsor lands, reserving a small life annuity therefrom. The settlement was organized as a town in 1667 and received, probably from him, the name of his old English home Kenilworth, afterwards corrupted to Killingworth, and now known as clinton. He was the first deputy from Kenilworth and continued to be its magistrate and representative for more than 20 years, 1662 to 1678-89, and 2was succeeded by his son John.

The Colonial Records show him to have been a very active, influential member of the legislature -- pre-eminently one of those men who, in the first half-century, did so much to make the small colony of Connecticut so important a factor in American affairs. As a member of Sessions, he had the pleasure of meeting with his brother Matthew and his own son Francis; and there has, since that time, rarely been an Assembly of Conn., in which some of their lineal descendants have not been members. He was frequently a commissioner; and in 1678, was on a committee for establishing a Latin school in New London, and was first deacon of the Kenilworth church.

emigrated and settled in Windsor, Connecticut in 1639.
When the Rev. Ephraim Huit arrived in Windsor, Conn. with his congregation about Aug. 17, 1639 to assist the Rev. John Warham, Edward and Margaret Griswold, their four children, Francis, George, John and Sarah; and Edward's brother, Matthew, were with the company. Mr. Huit had been pastor at Knowle and Wroxall, Warwickshire, England; Wroxall being a part of Kenilwroth Parish. A writer of note upon Religious subjects and a powerful preacher of the Puritan Faith, he was censured for his non-conformity and silenced by the bishop of Worcester. This no doubt was the cause of his moving to New England with the company he organised, of which both Edward and Matthew were members.

Edward speedily became prominant in the affairs of the new community and was frequently mentioned in Colonial Records. He served as deputy to the General Court from Aug. 18, 1658 - March 14, 1660 and again from May 15, 1662 - March 11, 1663. In 1659 he was one of the men from Windsor to build the fort at Springfield for Mr. Pynchon. He also served as justice of the peace. Although he was granted land in Poquonoc he did not move there until after the title of the indians had been fully extinguished in 1642. He was resident there in 1649 with two other families, John Bartlett and Thomas Holcomb. His home stood near the highway at the top of the hill and contained 29 1/2 acres bounded mostly south and west by Stony Brook and east by the river. His sons George and Joseph received the homestead when he moved to Hannonassett in 1663 with his son John and two daughters, Hannah Westover and Deborah Beull, with their families.

.... Edward was one of the first settlers of present Clinton, Conn. and doubtless suggested the name from Kenilworth Parish, England. He was the most prominent man in the new settlement and must be given full credit for first organising this community. He was its first deputy to the General Court. He with his two sons-in-law, were recorded as freement in 1669.

Edward was instrumental in organising the first church and was its first deacon. He frequently served on important civil matters; his services, counsel and guidence evidently much sought. He also served on the committee to establish a Latin School at New London.

Edward married (2) Sarah Dimond Bemis, daughter of John and Rebecca (Bemis) dimond and widow of James Bemis, Constable of New London, who died in 1665.

Edward Griswold was born about 1607, died at Kenilworth, Connecticut, 1691. He was deputy from Windsor and from Kenilworth for more than twenty years, was frequently a commissioner, and, in 1678, was on a committee to establish a Latin school in New London, and was the first deacon of Kenilworth (now Clinton) church. He married (first), 1630, in England, Margaret, who died August 23, 1670. He married (second) Sarah, widow of James Remis. Eleven children

Notes:
Fletcher family researchers, such as Edward Hatch Fletcher and Winifred Lovering Holman, have attempted to identify and document Robert Fletcher's ancestors for more than 150 years. Unfortunately, their exhaustive examination of the available records failed to produce any evidence to support the various theories regarding our patriarch's lineage. However, several published genealogies have identified Yorkshire, Shropshire, and Cumberland as possible locations for the birth of Robert Fletcher.

A letter alleged to have been written by Lydia Bates Fletcher from Concord in 1632 to her sister-in-law, Ruth Fletcher of Scrooby, England, has recently surfaced and appears to shed some light on the long-standing mystery. Although I have yet to locate the original letter or validate its authenticity, a transcription has been reproduced in two historical references. See Muirhead, J.F., American Shrines on English Soil, (1925); Bahin, Mrs. Louis Joseph, Collection of Genealogy Records, National Society, Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America, (1985) p. 72.

The letter at issue, in addition to providing a remarkable narrative of the pleasures and hardships experienced by early settlers of the "New Land", if genuine, establishes Lydia Bates as the wife of Robert Fletcher, not as the wife of his son William as previously asserted. It also mentions a previously undocumented daughter named Johna who was born in 1631 and refers to Moses Fletcher of the Mayflower as "brother." Finally, the letter identifies Ruth Fletcher of Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, England, as the sister of Robert, thus suggesting that Robert hailed from Scrooby as well.

Suggesting that the aforementioned letter is not genuine is the fact that the Concord Registers have William Fletcher and Lydia Bates marrying on September 7, 1645, and giving birth to a daughter, also named Lydia, on January 30, 1647. Conversely, the English separatists that originally colonized Plymouth and Concord lived in Nottinghamshire, England, until their resettlement to Leiden, the city from which they departed for the "New Land", in 1608. This fact tends to support the proposition that the letter from Lydia Bates Fletcher is authentic. Accordingly, further research need be undertaken to determine whether the letter is fact or fiction.

General Notes: One of the original settlers of Massachussets Bay colony 1633
In his tavern was the first post office in America in 1639

A primary goal of The Winthrop Society is to determine the identities of the first settlers of Massachusetts Bay Commonwealth. There are no firmer grounds for establishing an early settler among the founders of the Commonwealth than the lists of the first Freemen - those who applied for that estate in Boston in October, 1630, and those so sworn thereafter. The Freemen were the only colonists who were franchised to vote, and the franchise was not offered to all. One generally had to be a mature male church-member, and must have experienced a transforming spiritual experience by God's grace, as attested by himself and confirmed by church leaders. Therefore, the list of names below represents just a small percentage of the population. And apparently, a number of qualifying church-members would not take the oath because they had problems with the wording. An oath in those times was taken very seriously, as though it were a promise made directly to the Almighty with ones soul forfeit in the breach. Numerous persons who are on church and court records of 1630-1632 did not take the oath until 1634, when the oath was shortened and modified to replace the persons of the Governor etc. to whom obedience was due with the impersonal "common weale." Others, such as those who later became Quakers, objected strongly to oaths in general. One can understand all their reservations when one reads this "mother of all American loyalty oaths," below.
